St Leonards Gardens

The award winning restoration of a historic public gardens and gate house in the heart of Burton St Leonards, East Sussex.

Lead by Design Team members Bernard Baker and Paul Makwiramiti.

Awarded a commendation at the prestigious Georgian Group Architectural awards by the Right Honorable Reverned Dr John Sentuma, Lord Archbishop of York. This project oversaw the restoration of the St Leonards Georgian gardens.

Originally designed by James Burton in 1828, the gardens were originally created around plans to form a New Brighton further along the coast. Over the years the gardens gradually fell into decline and it became apparent that the restoration cost and scale would be significant.

Working alongside English Landscapes, Hastings Borough Council, ACTA and the National Lottery Heritage fund, Bernard and Paul oversaw the 1 million pound restoration on time and within budget. The gardens are now back to their former glory and they provide a stunning centre peice in the heart of Burton's St Leonards.
